"This strategic partnership underscores our commitment to developing a sustainable, low-carbon township. We are moving beyond simple collection to data-driven recovery." — Gerard Soosay, CEO of Sunway City Iskandar Puteri.

ISKANDAR PUTERI — The landscape of waste management in Johor is undergoing a radical digital transformation. Sunway City Iskandar Puteri (SCIP) has officially partnered with national waste concessionaire SWM Environment to launch the state's first cloud-based sustainable waste management system.

The initiative, powered by Rasuseco's backend analytics, integrates data from SWM's established KITARecycle program into a unified "Smart City Dashboard." This allows township management to monitor recycling rates in real-time, moving away from manual, monthly reporting.

From "Drive to Save" to Digital Twin

Historically, Iskandar Puteri has been proactive with initiatives like the "Drive to Save" recycling program organized by the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP). However, data fragmentation remained a challenge.

Since 2018, SCIP has successfully collected over 260,000 kg of recyclables. With this new digital integration, the township aims to double that efficiency by identifying "leakage points"—areas where recyclable material is still ending up in general waste bins.

The Rasuseco Integration

  • Unified Data: Aggregates KITARecycle user points, commercial waste data, and public bin sensors into one view for MBIP.
  • Carbon Tracking: Automatically converts kilogram-for-kilogram waste diversion into CO2e avoidance metrics, aligned with the Low Carbon Society Blueprint for Iskandar Malaysia 2030.
  • Leakage Alerts: AI algorithms flag sudden drops in recycling volumes at specific collection points (e.g., Sunway Big Box or Emerald Boulevard).

A Blueprint for National Policy

This pilot directly supports the Iskandar Puteri Climate Action Plan 2030 (IPCAP 2030). By digitizing the waste stream, stakeholders aim to provide the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) with a working model for mandatory EPR reporting, expected to roll out nationwide by 2026.

"Partnerships like this allow KITARecycle to expand into a cloud-data based ecosystem," said Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin, General Manager Corporate of SWM Environment. "It complements our efforts to incentivize recycling while supporting the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals of our corporate partners."

What's Next?

The pilot zone currently covers commercial hubs and select residential phases. Expansion plans for 2025 include integrating the system with the new "Odisi HijauX" E-waste collection initiative, ensuring that electronic waste is tracked with the same level of granularity as plastic and paper.
